The "Mugur" studio has established as a creative laboratory which was aimed to develop the original style of ceramics in the Udmurt Republic. In 1991, Anatoly Stepanov - an artist, ceramist and a teacher had initiated a research of local ceramic traditions as many ethnographic sources stated there were. Therefore, searching this subject there were discovered important things:
• artifacts in the archaeological excavations in the ancient Udmurt settlements; • motives from the folklore of the Udmurts (myths, legends and sayings); • certain Udmurt language vocabulary related to ceramic handicraft.
As a result of research, there was found the style which later was called as an Udmurt clay toy. Now Udmurt clay toys are well-known as national souvenirs from Udmurtia. These are shulan (whistles), muguran (ocarinas) and dolls in national costumes.
Since the 90-s the studio has developed its activities. So far, these are:
• Making the national souvenirs and musical instruments; • Educational programs for students and teachers; • Participating in exhibitions and showcases.
The "Mugur" studio is an active participant of many social events happening in the region. Moreover, it has many partner relationships with many local organization such as Udmurt Public Youth Organization "Shundy" (the Sun) etc.
For the last few years "Mugur" studio has realized several projects: since 2006 - The touring exhibition "Ulon bugor" (The Ball of Life) has been exposing around the Udmurt Republic.
2008 - Publishing a complete set "Udmurt Syui Munyo" / the Udmurt clay toy by Anatoly and Vera Stepanovs authorship. The set includes a work-book for children 6-9 year old and text book for teachers. This became possible with the financial support of Finland as a part of educational project managed by "Suomi - Venaja" society for non-governmental finno-ugric organizations.
